...I had a conversation with a non-binary person
in my office
"They", and unfortunately, I repeatedly referred to them as "she" and "her" throughout the group conversation, shared how gendered they felt in our workplace. It was my first opportunity to hear a non-binary person directly share their experience of gendering.
Our gender labels invalidated their way of being in the world. They felt uncomfortable every day at work.
I am not saying I fully understood their feelings. How could I? But they were clear that seeing their work colleagues declare their personal pronouns in their email signature made a huge difference to their sense of safety in the workplace.
So I went back to my office and added my personal pronouns.
It was simple and there was no downside.
So that's why this is here.
